One of our favorite family activities is taking a trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. The BBG website lists what plants are in bloom, so you can check before your visit. Wander through the rose gardens, inhale the blooming lavender trees, get lost in a field of bluebells, or check out the bonsai and orchid collections in the stunning greenhouse.
The garden also brings in some art installations throughout the season. We loved the Birdhouse Exhibit, which showcased unique artist-created birdhouses. There was even one shaped like a bodega and a hot dog cart!

One of the most popular times to visit is late May, when the cherry blossoms begin to bloom. Their coming is greatly anticipated; you can check Cherry Watch, BBG’s interactive garden map, to see when the blossoms are out.
Even though spring is one of the best times to visit, there are events throughout the year that bring patrons out. One of our favorites is in October: the Chile Pepper Festival, where vendors distribute samples of hot sauces, chile-laced chocolates, pepper jams, piquant salsas, hot honeys, and tangy pickles. The event includes live music and farmer’s market stalls as well, selling chiles grown in the New York region.
Another great seasonal event is the Holiday Lightscape, when the gardens are lit up with holiday light displays and light installations.
Brooklyn Botanic Garden has great kids programming as well. The Discovery Garden includes interactive exhibits and there are often craft, gardening, or music projects available for kids to try. Check the calendar for live music performances.
Admission is $18 and free for children under 12.
